Jonas Kaufmann to sing in Stockholm

According to friends and gossip, Calssicalify can now confirm that hunk tenor Jonas Kaufmann will sing in Stockholm on September 2 at a Jussi Björling Gala at Royal Opera (tickets are on sale now). The homepage of Royal Opera Stockholm does not reveal the singers, but our sources are confirming. Also on stage will be Swedish Wagner tenor Michael Weinius. Here is the text for the concert, copied from Royal Opera homepage (also check the homepage for updates on singers):

Jussi Björling – 100 years
2 september 2011

The 2nd of February 2011 marked the 100th anniversary of Jussi Björling’s birth, and our great tenor will no doubt be greatly honoured both in Sweden and abroad throughout the year. The Royal Opera in Stockholm will celebrate the memory of his birth with a jubilee concert on 2nd September. Together with the Royal Orchestra and the conductor Stefan Solyom our opera soloists will perform several of his most well-known songs and arias.

Jussi Björling was one of the twentieth century’s leading and most beloved singers. At nineteen years of age he sang his first major role, as Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Juan, at the Royal Opera. Eight years later he was standing on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera having already achieved great success at several of the largest opera institutions in Europe. In 1944 he was appointed Royal Court Singer. Jussi Björling was born in Borlänge in Dalecarlia and died on 9th September 1960 at his summer residence on the island of Siarö in the Stockholm archipelago after an outstanding and intense career.
